Since the pandemic, climate consciousness and cost savings have often been in the limelight, driving interest in staycations and more eco-friendly travel. We asked Scots about their travel choices within Scotland. 

What did we ask?


  1. Have you travelled at all within Scotland this year for leisure purposes - i.e. a day trip, an overnight stay or holiday?
  2. Which of the following methods have you used on your travels around Scotland this year?

Leisure travel in Scotland


When asking if our panel had travelled for leisure purposes within Scotland this year, 83% said they had for at least a day trip.


Almost 1 in 4 Scots (23%) have travelled within Scotland in 2024 for a holiday or staycation. 

Travel methods


60% of Scots who have travelled for leisure in 2024 have used public transport (i.e. bus, coach, train or ferry) on their journey.


While still less than the largest group (85%), who used a car, this shows that half of all Scots (50%) have used public transport for leisure purposes.


Broken down, 42% of those travelling used the train, 30% used a bus or coach and 18% ferry. Otherwise, 10% used a taxi, 6% a motorhome or campervan, and 4% bike.
